Seaweed

Seaweed Cultivation Pilot – Land-Based Collaboration Opportunity

We invite coastal partners to participate in an innovative pilot initiative to cultivate red seaweed (Chondrus crispus and Palmaria palmata) for use in methane-reducing cattle feed. This project aligns with DEFRA’s sustainability goals and supports the UK’s Net Zero commitments, while offering coastal economic revitalisation and ecological regeneration.

What We’re Proposing

Use of intertidal or nearshore zones, unused quay space, or aquaculture-friendly plots for low-impact cultivation.

Initial setup funded via grant applications and environmental development schemes (e.g. Farming Innovation Programme, Coastal Communities Fund).

Technical support via research partners (e.g. Rothamsted, SRUC, Plymouth Marine Lab).

Shared revenue from harvested seaweed, with projected buyer interest from livestock cooperatives and environmental initiatives.

Why Collaborate?

Diversify coastal income: Monetise underutilised marine spaces through a sustainable aquaculture model.

Ecological gain: Seaweed cultivation improves water quality, acts as carbon sink, and protects biodiversity.

Policy-aligned: Supports Climate Change Act 2008 and Agriculture Act 2020 objectives.

Low infrastructure burden: Pilot sites require minimal modification and can operate alongside existing marine activity.
